About ten years ago, I started a little nonprofit that helps wildlife. In the process of running the program, I read more than 1800 stories from wildlife rehabbers about how and why they became dedicated to saving wildlife.
I started to see a pattern: a surprising number of people had a wildlife encounter that couldn’t be explained—encounters that changed their lives and defied what we know about animals and ourselves. It’s not just wildlife rehabbers who have these wildly unexpected experiences. It’s regular folk like you and me.
